SIM Swap Fraud: Understanding and Protecting Yourself

SIM swap fraud, also known as SIM card scams, represents a growing threat to personal and financial security.

This sophisticated technique allows cybercriminals to take control of a victim’s phone number, giving them direct access to sensitive information and online accounts.

In this article, we will explain in detail what SIM swap fraud is, how it works, its consequences, and above all, how to protect yourself effectively against this threat.

What is SIM swap fraud?

SIM swap fraud, also known as “SIM hijacking” or “SIM swapping”, is a fraud technique that involves impersonating a victim to a mobile phone operator.

The objective is to have the victim’s phone number transferred to a SIM card controlled by the fraudster. Once this transfer is completed, the fraudster has access to all communications and notifications linked to the victim’s phone number.

How does SIM card fraud work?

SIM swap fraud proceeds in several stages:

  1. Information gathering

First, fraudsters collect personal information about the victim. They may use phishing techniques to obtain details such as the name, address and phone bill details.

They may also resort to social engineering, by calling the victim and posing as an employee of the phone operator or another institution to obtain confidential information.

  1. Contacting the operator

Once armed with this information, the fraudsters contact the mobile phone operator and claim to be the victim. They request the transfer of the phone number to a new SIM card.

Although the operator may require proof of identity, if the fraudster has managed to obtain sufficient information, they can easily convince the operator to proceed with the transfer.

  1. Access to accounts

Once the phone number has been transferred, the fraudster receives all notifications, verification codes and calls intended for the victim. This information allows them to reset the passwords of the victim’s online accounts, such as banks, social networks and messaging services.

What are the consequences of SIM swap fraud?

The consequences of this type of fraud can be serious and multiple.

  1. Financial loss

On the financial side, fraudsters can access the victim’s bank accounts, make fraudulent purchases, and even take out loans using the victim’s identity.

Cryptocurrency trading accounts are particularly vulnerable, as they are often protected by verification codes sent by SMS.

  1. Loss of personal data

In terms of personal data loss, these bad actors can access sensitive information, photos, messages and other data stored on mobile devices.

This information can be used to commit other forms of fraud, such as identity theft

  1. Social and professional impact

On the social and professional level, the victim may suffer damage to their reputation if the fraudster uses their phone number to send inappropriate messages or publications.

Personal and professional relationships may also be affected if the victim’s contacts receive fraudulent messages.

How to protect yourself against SIM swap fraud?

Protecting against SIM swap fraud requires a multi-faceted approach. Here are some important recommendations to consider:

1. Secure your personal information

It is important to secure personal information by being wary of unsolicited calls, emails and messages requesting personal information.

You should also avoid sharing sensitive information online or by phone, unless you are certain of the identity of the person you are communicating with.

2. Use strong authentication methods

Using strong authentication methods is also necessary. It is recommended to enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on all online accounts and to favour authentication apps such as Google Authenticator or Authy rather than codes sent by SMS.

Using physical keys, such as USB security keys, can also provide additional protection.

3. Secure your operator account

It is also important to secure your operator account by using a complex and unique password, and by choosing security questions that are difficult to guess.

4. Monitor and stay vigilant

Regular monitoring of bank accounts and online accounts to detect any suspicious activity is essential. It is also recommended to enable alerts on accounts to be informed in real time of any unusual transaction or connection.

5. Contact your operator

Ask your operator to implement additional security measures, such as specific passwords for transactions.

And if you suspect fraud, immediately contact your operator to block your SIM card and report the incident.

What is the role of mobile phone operators?

Mobile phone operators have an important role to play in the fight against SIM card fraud. They can implement stricter security measures, such as:

  • Rigorous verification: Requiring more robust proof of identity before proceeding with a SIM card transfer.
  • Sending alerts: Sending automatic alerts to customers when a SIM card transfer request is made.
  • Enhanced staff training: Training staff to recognise the signs of fraud and to adopt more rigorous verification procedures.
